What is Makie?

Maki-e is one of the most famous and exquisite traditional techniques in the world of Japanese Lacquer. It is a decorated technique, which is drawn on an object that needs to be completed at first. The object is used to be wood, or lacquering. Every step is decorated by hand in many hours of supreme craftsmanship. Numerous advanced techniques are employed in the manufacturing process; it takes more then several months to produce just one work by Maki-e techniques.

This level of art requires a long tradition of inherited master skills. It takes decades of intensive training before an artist can accomplish a perfect Maki-e painting.
